Bluestem Center is Green

Rochester, MN, designed by HGA Architects

Bluestem Center for Child and Family Development specializes in the treatment of complex learning and behavioral problems in children and teens.  “Safe, nurturing, and homelike”, were the key characteristics HGA was given to guide the development of the design, and these features permeate the project.

The site, overlooking the Zumbro River just a few blocks from downtown Rochester, Minnesota, has views across the river to a wooded hillside.  HGA shaped the building both to take advantage of these views to the west, and to create a landscaped courtyard on the east and south, defined by the two wings of the building.  The three-level, 13,800 SF building makes good use of the sloping site - with a walk-out on the lowest level leading to a patio and play therapy areas.

The form and detailing of the building is reminiscent of houses and barns of the region. Gable roofs, lap siding in several colors, large windows, and a covered entrance porch all lend to the character of the building.   The interior finish palette emphasizes natural materials, textures, and colors.

The Center’s mission of caring and healing are supported by the building’s attention to the natural environment. The site had once been a landfill, and then had been used to deposit dredging spoils from a flood control project - significant amounts of excavation and soil restoration were needed. Construction waste was recycled.

The building is heated and cooled with a groundsource heat-pump system. Windows were sized to maximize day lighting, and the fins on the east and west faces help shade them from low angle sun, as well as support a trellis for plants - to filter the light.  The conventionally framed building is highly insulated at the masonry foundation, walls, and attic. Prefinished exterior siding carries a 50 year warranty, and rapidly renewable straw-board was used as the core for interior cabinetry.
