Fareway Foods Finds
Free Way to Heat Building

Fareway Foods opened  in Stewartville, MN, in January 2009, and the  grocery store hasn't had a heating bill yet.

Like most grocery stores, Fareway Foods has many aisles lined with refrigeration units. Unlike most grocery stores, Fareway Food recovers the heat that is emitted by the compressors for  those units to heat the building and heat the store's hot water.

The system works so effectively  that since opening last January,  the 31,000sf  store has never had to turn on its auxiliary electric heat system.

The Stewartville grocery store is is Fareway Foods 96th store, but its first operation in Minnesota.  Manager Paul Schemmel  notes that the store also recycles shrink wrap and cardboard and heartily encourages  the use of reusable bags as part of its efforts to be environmentally responsible.
